Sitar Maestro - Pandit Nikhil Banerjee

Pandit Nikhil Banerjee was well known for the sweetness of personality as well as for the unrivaled sweetness of playing. His untimely death in 1986 was a blow to the world of classical music. He is sorely missed. Trained initially by his father Jitendranath Banerjee. To broaden his understanding and technique, Nikhil Banerjee studied with Ustad Allaudin Khan of Maihar he spent 15 years at Maihar. Pandit Banerjee's development of the raga and his inventions are, fortunately for us, recorded for lovers of Indian classical music to admire for generations to come. He has received thePadmabhushan Award for Excellence from the President of India. The purity of his style and the seriousness in his music, reflected a devotion to the total development of the Raga, that allowed for nothing short of perfection.
